In line with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) World Mental Health Day, celebrated on October 10 of each year, the VMMC Department of Psychiatry observed its 7th annual Mental Health Day 2017 with a 3-day celebration.
The annual celebration was kicked off by a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony of the Lobby Exhibit last October 9, 2017, headed by our Medical Director Dr. Dominador M. Chiong, Jr, Chief of Professional Staff Dr. Mariano A. Mejia, Acting Assistant Chief of Professional Staff Dr. Felicitas Artiaga-Soriano, and Acting Head of the Department of Psychiatry, Dr. Amadeo Alinea, Jr. The exhibit showcased photos depicting ways to cope with mental health issues, banners with statistics and info graphics on mental health in the workplace, and tips on how to deal with stress in the workplace. There were also expression boards wherein spectators can post a note or receive little snippets of good vibes.
On October 10, 2017, the annual lecture-symposium was held at the Basilio Valdes Hall. This symposium was formed as a venue wherein people can discuss mental health issues freely, particularly issues related to mental health and illnesses in the workplace. The following topics were discussed, as deemed relevant in the hospital setting: Burnout in Residency Training by Dr. Anna Noel, Substance Use in the Workplace by the Department Head Dr. Amadeo Alinea, Bullying in the Workplace by Dr. Fernando Soriano, Mental Health among Nurses by Ward 5 Head Nurse Ms. Bernadette Navarra, RN, and Mindfulness for the Modern Workforce by child and adolescent psychiatrist Dr. Georgina Gozo-Oliver. The lecture was well-attended by various VMMC Staff, including nurses and nursing aides, resident physicians, administrative personnel, and civilians.
The 6th VMMC Pa-Utakan! Quiz Show was held last October 11, 2017 at the Basilio Valdes Hall. The annual quiz show gained so much popularity over the years; the department came up with ways to keep it exciting. Last year, the group from the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation was champion for the 3rd consecutive year. This year, ten (10) groups were in the running towards the championship, braving thru 3 rounds of questions. Ultimately, the much coveted title of Champion went to the PGI Group. The Pharmacy and Social Service Group garnered 2nd place, followed by Family Medicine and OPD Group placing in 3rd.
The aim of the mental health day celebration is to raise awareness on mental health issues, and decrease, if not eradicate, the stigma on mental health. It is an opportunity for mental health and allied workers to talk about their work and what needs to be done to provide quality mental health care for all.
