In 1979, the Ethics Committee was established for the purpose of establishing guidelines on research studies to be conducted in Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC).
In 2010 the VMMC-Institutional Review Board (VMMC-IRB) evolved from the Ethics Committee(established in 1979) by virtue of VMMC Memo Order # 58 dated 02 November 2010.
The VMMC-IRB is composed of medical/scientific professionals and non-medical/ non-scientific members working together in a committee that safeguards the rights, safety, and well-being of all subjects involved in a clinical trial and providing public assurance of that protection. The Board aims to do this by reviewing and approving and/or providing favorable opinion on the clinical trial protocol, the suitability of the investigators, the process of obtaining and documenting informed consent of the trial subjects, the facilities, methods and materials to be used in the clinical trial.
The VMMC IRB adheres strictly to all the policies and guidelines of the international Conference on Harmonisation-Good Clinical Practice (ICH-GCP). As such, close monitoring of compliance to ICH-GCP Guidelines is the norm in the conduct of any study or clinical trial which the IRB approves.
